Hiram Sage

Hiram Sage

Hiram Sage was born in a log cabin in Saratoga County on August 18, 1837. He was the son of Beliah William Sage (a captain in the War of 1812 and a school teacher) and Sally (aka Sarah) Ann Jones. Hiram was one of 16 children and the brother of Nancy Sage Pier Hiler.

Hiram was a certain of the Civil War, enlisting in Saratoga Springs and mustered in as a private in Co. E I the 83rd NY Infantry on August 11, 1863. He transferred to Co. E in the Ny 97th Infancy on June 7, 1864. He was discharged from service on May 13, 1865.

After the war, he relocated to the town of Parma and lived on Clarkson Parma Townline Road, near Knapp’s Corners. He married Hannah Louisa Pratt (1843 – 1918) and they had ten children: Edward, Isabel, Fred, Jessica, Lillian, Clara, Horace, Lewis, William and Clarence. They lived in a small house with three bedrooms and one large room used as both a living room and kitchen.

In 1897, the family suffered a terrible tragedy with the death of 12 year old Clarence. He was riding a horse when the animal became frightened and Clarence fell off. His leg became entangled in a rope, and he he was drawn about half a mile before he could be rescued. He unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and the family was devastated. He is buried in the Sage-Knapp Pioneer Cemetery, but no headstone remains.

Hiram’s wife Hannah passed away in 1918, at the age of 73. Hiram lived to the old age of 85, and passed away in 1922.
